Barry Segal is a recognized and successful businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and humanitarian who has been devoting his life to improve conditions in Africa.
After more than a decade in business, Segal started his entrepreneurship journey in 1966 launching his own company Bradco, a massive building material supply company. In 2004, after a trip to Rwanda that sparked his interest in international development and philanthropy, Segal founded the Segal Family Foundation, a non-profit organization that is committed to supporting community-based organizations with the localised knowledge needed to create sustainable change in their communities. The Segal Family Foundation has supported over 200 partners in 20 African countries, aiming to create an environment for innovators to amplify and grow their impact, by providing tools, building networks, and connecting them to investment. In 2015, Segal founded a second foundation, Focus for Health that promotes advocacy, education, and research to combat the rise of chronic illness occurring around the world. The foundation is committed to decreasing the rising trend of both autism and chronic illness.
Throughout the years, the Segal Family Foundation has partnered with others and lots of successful projects such as constructing housing for family medicine trainees in Malawi and for faculty doctors in Uganda came true. “In Sub-Saharan Africa, we like to find small operations where a little money can help them grow and expand,” Segal has said.
We award Barry Segal as SIA-Africa’s Person of the Month for July 2021 for making a sustainable impact and contributing to improve education and healthcare in Africa.
