SIA-Africa Person of the Month, April 2023: Ger Duany

Ger Duany is an established actor and United Nations Ambassador, an influential member to society. He openly supports the UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency, as a strong proprietor of young people’s education, aiming to educate the refugee children and give them a chance at success, even with the adversity they already faced. As an activist, Ger Duany has spoken at multiple events including the Social Good Summit in New York, the Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement in Geneva, Nansen Refugee Awards hosted by UNHCR, TEDXPalaceDesNations, and at the Tokyo Film Festival. Ger Duany is a strong advocate for the betterment of refugee lives, and has attended many conferences and panels between the years of 2015 and the present. 

Ger Duany grew up in Akobo in South Sudan where he had his first experience with war at the young age of only seven years old. He was soon separated from his mother where he was then forced to work as a child soldier at the age of 13. Later, around 15 years old, Duany became a refugee and was relocated to the United States. 

Through his hardships, Duany still managed to make his debut as an actor in 2004 in I Heart Huckabees where he played the role of a refugee. Many of his roles are representative of his life and giving meaning to the hardships he endured in his childhood. Through his career, he has appeared in many award-winning films, proving himself in his career.

SIA-Africa names Ger Duany as its Person of the Month for April 2023, for his consistent activism through the years and his role in creating opportunities for refugee children.
