Roger Federer is a Swiss professional tennis player. He was ranked world no. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 310 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks, and has finished as the year-end No. 1 five times.
In 2003, he established the Roger Federer Foundation to help disadvantaged children and to promote their access to education and sports. In his capacity as the founder and president of the Roger Federer Foundation, he has been involved in strategic roles, governance and visits to the African countries in which his foundation has a presence. He has raised funds for the foundation in part through the Match for Africa exhibition series.
The foundation is currently conducting School Readiness programs in six countries in Southern Africa (Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa) plus Switzerland.
Since May 2004, he has been supporting the South Africa-Swiss charity IMBEWU, which helps children better connect to sports as well as social and health awareness. In 2005, he visited South Africa to meet children who had benefited from his support
On 24 November 2017, Federer received an honorary doctorate from his home university, the University of Basel, in recognition of his role in increasing the international reputation of Basel and Switzerland, and for his work for children in Africa through his charitable foundation.
