Queen Mother, leader, CEO and television personality, Queen Nana Adwoa Awindor is SIA-Africa Person of the Month for September 2020. Born in Ghana in the Ashanti Region to the Adum stool house of royals, Awindor’s leadership and media production prowess begins after high school when she settles on the National Film and Television Institute over the University of Ghana, Legon for college.
As a young lady she found a keen interest in capturing motions and memories on video cameras. Awindor was driven by the power of telling stories and conveying ideas with the video camera. She began recording family and community events to depict the everyday life of Ghanaians.
Awindor spent the next few years after high school at the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) where she learned film and multimedia production. The development queen mother has worked with multiple organizations and institutions such as the National Service Secretariat, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, and later on as a lecturer at NAFTI.
She is notably known for her television program “Greetings from Abroad” in which she hosts Ghanaians in the diaspora and connects the reality of their lives with that of their families at home in Ghana. Nana revealed in an interview with CityTV’s Breakfast Daily the desire to bridge the gap between Ghanaians abroad and at home in terms of understanding the realities of life as her motivation. Awindor was named CIMG Marketing Woman of the Year in 2006. In 2013, she was elected the First President of the Continental Executive Board of the African Queens and Women Cultural Leaders Network. She is a member of the Ghana National Union of Queenmothers (Women Traditional Leaders). After over two decades of marketing, television, and multimedia production Queen Awindor has actively taken on several other developmental roles mainly aimed at improving the life of the Ghanaian girl-child. Through her nonprofit OBAAPA Development Foundation, the successful multimedia producer advocates for girl-child education and hygiene. Over the past few years, her organization has traveled across Ghanaian schools and communities to educate young females on the need for education, personal hygiene, mentorship.
For forging a channel to connect Ghanaians at home and abroad, the mentorship and hope she has brought to girls and women, and her relentless desire to serve the nation Ghana, we honor Queen Nana Awindor SIA-Africa's September 2020 Person of the Month.
